Olympus XA1, Early at the Farmer's Market

Olympus XA1
Analog Diary: Film photography favorites, early at the farmer's market, images with a vintage Olympus XA1 35mm film camera, a simple, battery-free 35mm point-and-shoot autoexposure camera.

A late addition to the 'At the Farmer's Market' series, posted earlier with images from the Nokia Asha 300. On this visit, I also took the Olympus XA1, which was loaded with a roll of expired Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400, and finished the roll with these no-flash images. The time was very early, dawn was just about to break, and the stalls were illuminated only by their LED or other light sources.

The visit was quite a while ago, actually. Having the film developed at the lab was a long wait, as we had to wait past the 'lockdown rules' when moving along the neighborhood crossovers was easier. I also made a double mistake with the scanned images, as I had the original scans post-processed and reposted to the original folder before realizing the error. I was not up to making another set of scans, so I continued with the final enhancements and print finishing with the already post-processed images.

The images did well, however, thanks to the D.Zuiko 35mm F4 lens of the XA1 and, though expired, the Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400. Both are with characters of their own. The Olympus XA1, often overlooked in the Olympus XA family of capsule cameras, is still equipped with an outstanding Zuiko lens, and the Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400, a daylight-balanced fine-grain all-purpose high-performance and high-speed color negative film, is truly exceptional.

HMD Nokia 3.1, At The Farmer's Market

HMD Nokia 3.1
Mobile Photography: At the local Sunday Farmer's Market, with images from the HMD Nokia 3.1, almost a vintage entry-level budget smartphone from 2018, still with a workable camera.

An outing with the age-old smartphone on a street shoot at the local Sunday morning Farmers Market, a vibrant community space where local farmers sell fresh produce and other goods directly to consumers, and an opportunity to focus on people and their interactions within their urban environment.

Doing so, in a genre that emphasizes spontaneity and authenticity, often portraying people in their natural environments without staging or intervention, calls for quick and unobtrusive shooting, normally with cameras fitted with wide-angle lenses to capture more of the scene without drawing attention.

There are also times when an opportunity arises, when a shot can be taken from within the scene itself. An advantage, of course, is to use a mobile or a smartphone for the shoot.

Borne from the works that can be traced back to the 19th century when artists like Charles Nègre began documenting urban life, and early practitioners like André Kertész used portable cameras to capture spontaneous scenes in Paris.

Though having its roots alongside photojournalism, street photography is now a distinct form of artistic expression, separate from traditional documentary photography due to its emphasis on personal interpretation and aesthetic choices rather than strict narrative guidelines.

For the budding photographer with an eye for spontaneity and incidentals, street photography is not necessarily constrained to the streets or urban settings alone; it may go far beyond that. The genre invites photographers to explore their surroundings with curiosity and creativity, capturing moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This approach fosters a unique connection between the photographer and their environment, encouraging an ongoing dialogue about perception and representation in visual art.

The market at our local is a weekly affair, none too big, with only a row of stalls displaying their produce and staples along a precinct street closed to vehicular traffic. Activities start at the crack of dawn, with the crowd growing as the morning lingers until it peters out about mid-morning when the stalls close and the clean-up begins.

As the genre is the documentation of human experience in various contexts, the ubiquitous smartphone, with its wide-angle lens, is all you need to start with. Mine, which was put to good use for this short, is an age-old HMD Nokia 3.1, an entry-level Android smartphone released in 2018 by HMD Global.

Pentax K-m, SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f/4 III

Pentax K-m, SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f/4
CCD Resurgence: The street scene with a Pentax K-m, and SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f/4, a perfect kit setup as both comes with the standard Pentax K-mount.

Had the chance to take out the 10MP CCD Pentax K-m, mounted with the SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f/4, for an early morning street shoot at the Balai Baru Farmer's Market, or Nat, at a suburban center on the outskirts of Kangar, the capital of Perlis.

The word Nat, or a farmers' street market, offering fresh produce and household necessities, is synonymous with the two northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, Kedah and Perlis, held alternatively at differing locations each day.  Normally starting after the dawn prayer, the Nat peters out as the sun rises and ends around midday.

This one here, in Balai Baru, is held thrice a week, with the main market day being on Saturdays, while the other two supportive days, with a smaller crowd of buyers and sellers, are on Mondays and Wednesdays. The market activities, aside from being housed under a covered area built by the municipality, sprawl along both sides of the road frontage, making it a slow crawl for motorized traffic and a leisure shopping experience for the pedestrian shoppers.

As for the compact and handy circa 2012 10MP CCD Pentax K-m (K2000 in the US), the camera is as good as it comes and still works flawlessly despite its age. The SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm f/4, the only 35-70mm Pentax lens with a fixed aperture, is equally competent at capturing the essence of the morning event, shooting against the sun and all. For CCD digital camera enthusiasts, the Pentax K-m is worth a look at, not too many around on the auction market though, with prices that tend to be slightly higher than average.

Nokia Asha 300, at the Farmer's Market I

It has to be a very early morning trudge or even a footslog, verging on dawn, if you are after the best of choice and the widest of selection of farm produce and what have you at the farmer's market. Park your car away from the rush into the site's parking lot, do the walk-in instead, and take your time with the pick, and you can still be done before the sun is up.

Part II of my outing to the Farmer's Market with the Nokia Asha 300, with the images cropped to the 2.7:1 image aspect ratio. The crop might not be the true Xpan image, but the image aspect ratio is. The visit has been quite a while, just before the COVID-19 constraints were imposed.

Finishing off my image series from a couple of visits to the local Farmer's Market, done just before the COVID-19 confinement. While images on Part I and Part II, shot on the prior, were cropped to the 2.7:1 image aspect ratio, these later images are not. These are the 4:3 aspect images from the 5MP Nokia Asha 300, resized to 800 pixels on the taller side.
