Found Slides, Converted to Black-and-White

Vintage analog color and black-and-white slide images from way back in the 1980s, scanned, edited and post-processed for enhanced web publishing.

Another batch of found slides, 30+ years old, shot in color, but for this session, the images have been scanned and converted to black-and-white with the Monochrome & Sepia tool, and tweaked for Auto Tone Correction, Contrast, Tone Curve, Brightness & Contrast, Hue & Saturation, Unsharp Mask and Noise Reduction, on the image editor Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3).

Why? Well, for one, the originals are slightly faded and the colors are off and could be a lame sight to see these slides in their original disposition.

Black-and-white images, with their broad tonal ranges and deep rich blacks, relax you and sets your mind into the subconscious, deciphering the image is then simply visual impact and resonance. Light, form, and texture are more compelling in an image rather than the hues of the subject matter, and color serves more as a distraction than the means to an end.

Went back to rummaging through my slide collection recently and updated the database with a few more found slide images from the latest scan. The scan included this set of images of brightly chromed helmets of a vintage fire brigade squad at a citizen festival. This was way back in the 1980s.

If I remember correctly, I had the Olympus OM-2n mounted with a Zuiko OM 135mm F2.8 lens, and the images were shot on a roll of Kodachrome slide film.

Continued on with the series of found slides, namely Converted to Black-and-White, The Idyllic Life, Minimalism, and Shades of Blue, captured on Kodachrome and Ektachrome Slide film on the Olympus OM-1n, my only SLR camera then.

The images were captured, if I remember correctly, with the Zuiko OM 50mm F1.8 and Sigma 24mm F2.8 XQ Filtermatic.

The slides, +30 years old by now, were scanned on the Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II Film & Document Scanner and post-processed for finishing touches on Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3).

Another batch of found slides, 30+ years old, scanned and post-processed on Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3). Shots are the children of friends, neighbors, and part of our own extended family. It was a good life back then, nay a worry in the world, youth was on your side, life was fun and easy, and carefree.

Given the chance to have one of your own, what would yours be? Will you be away from the hustle and bustle of city life? Away from the daily grind of commuting to and from work? Where will you be? What will you be doing? Do you have any other responsibilities besides being just yourself?

Found Slides, Minimalist

Minimalism, in visual arts, music, and other mediums, is a style that uses the minimum of design elements. The movement emerged in New York in the early 1960s as artists moved toward geometric abstraction in painting and sculpture.

While some appreciate the openness of this idea, embracing the freedom of interpretation, others take the opposite stance, despising the lack of direction or subject matter. In photography, however, where a photo represents a moment in time and place, minimalism is instead used to enhance the impact of the image.

The rule? Keep it simple. Pick the strongest element of the shot, focus on what catches and engages the eye, and use the leading line and negative space to accentuate its prominence. Use the rule of thirds to help you compose. Work on a good depth of field to draw the eye to the composition's focus. Go for distinct textures and colors, get the light just right, and work from a vantage point that will put all these in perspective.

Tell a story, bring people and figures into the context of your composition, and convey a scene or event using reduced subject matter, colors, and shapes. Post-processing your shots should be reasonably straightforward as you already have a good notion of what you want with simple but dramatic images. Consider something surreal, use the artist in you to create a piece of art instead, or just stay true to life and process in its utmost simplicity.

I was rummaging through my boxes of storage boxes of camera and photography paraphernalia and came across a stacked album of slides taken 30+ ago when I was very much younger and had been traveling around a bit during my study and early working years.

I was also working on the Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II at the same time and decided to start scanning some of the slides and see what I came up with. The 9000F Mark II, though some find it a bit of fuss to work with, is actually a delight to work with.

If you are having the same problem as I was, my recommendation is to use only the IJ Scan Utility and the Scan Gear option. In the setting for Scan Gear, make sure you enable the 'Enable large image scan' option if you are going to scan 120 films, then use the Scan Gear Advanced Mode to set up the 'Scan Area' size for the film size option.

The images here were uploaded to my image editor, Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3), where I gave them all a once over with individual tweaks including Auto Tone Correction, Tilt Adjustment & Crop, Shading Compensation, Tone Curve, Brightness & Contrast, Hue & Saturation, Sharpness & Blur, and Noise Reduction.
