People And Places: An idea book project for the pandemic stay-at-home confinement, a date-timed, annotated thematic image triptych picture book on Google Photos.

With many photographers spending a lot more time at home or indoors during this COVID-19 stay-at-home pandemic confinement, the challenge to keep going and occupied may come as a daunting task, leaving you sometimes struggling for inspiration. This should not be the case; you should not let that happen, the creative juice must keep on flowing.

Do not fret too much at your inability to go out for a shoot, or to take the exposed film roll to the lab for processing, and the missing moments of satisfaction at seeing the negative frames popping up as full JPEG images on the scanner. There are always other ideas that you can be creative with, look at, or just get started on.

One idea I started on is to organize and manage a gallery of archived images on a shared photo-sharing platform, Google Photos. I found it easy and straightforward to do what I had planned with the 'Album' function that came with the app. My take on the project is to create the Analog Diary Photo Book as a date-timed, annotated thematic image triptych.

After a couple of trials and I had the Picture Book going in the direction it was meant to be. Currently, though, the project is still in its infancy, with very limited image content. This will, of course, change over time, and as it is set to be a long-term project, I am sure that its development will go far and long beyond the confines of any current hardships. Looking forward to your visit.

Part II of my outing to the Farmer's Market with the Nokia Asha 300, with the images cropped to the 2.7:1 image aspect ratio. The crop might not be the true Xpan image, but the image aspect ratio is. The visit has been quite a while, just before the COVID-19 constraints were imposed.

Olympus Pen-FT, A Night Take

Half-Frames: Film photography favorites, images with a vintage analog Olympus Pen-FT half-frame 35mm film SLR, from the only half-frame SLR camera system ever made, a night-out take.

The COVID-19 constraint has really put a damper on external photographic activities you can get involved in and be motivated by. While some of you might get the jitters with interest wavering, that should not be the case for most of us.

As for the motivator to keep me going, I have two areas of interest that are currently keeping me occupied. First is digging up the archive for images still unpublished or having missed the cue, and second, trying out the post-processing app, which I have been deferring from looking through for so long.

This batch is from a collection of images shot with the Olympus Pen-FT, with its accompanying F.Zuiko Auto-S 38mm F1.8, from about 5 years ago, that has remained unpublished despite my efforts to have all of them posted previously. At long last, they do have their chance now of being published and to be looked at, applauded, and appreciated if they so deserve it.

Konica C35 EF, Sights and Scenes III

Konica C35 EF
Analog Diary: Film photography favorites, images with a vintage Konica C35 EF, the Pikkari, the first compact 35mm film camera with a fully built-in electronic flash.

Last in the series of five images with the Konica C35 EF, one of the cameras mentioned to have a very capable lens and very good shooting habits. The camera, nicknamed 'Pikkari' in Japan, was the world’s first 35mm compact camera with built-in flash, and the first plastic-bodied C35 that was introduced after the earlier Konica C35 series.

The C35 EF is available in two iterations, with the latter incorporating a self-timer located to the left lens at a new speed of 1/250th of a second, added to the 1/60 and 1/125 from the older model, and an orange plastic flash release knob (the old one came with a black plastic one) and the focusing symbols on the lens focusing barrel are framed. Otherwise, the two cameras were mechanically similar.

The C35 EF's light meter requires a 1.3V PX675 mercury battery. As a replacement, a 1.5V button cell should work almost as well. Flash requires two AA alkaline batteries, while NiMh rechargeable batteries are not advised.

Cameras and Lenses: Sunbeam abstracts on the curtain with an Olympus Zuiko OM 100mm f/2.8, a highly praised lens for its tiny size, lightweight footprint, and sharp central rendering, a 200mm full-frame equivalent on the Olympus PEN E-P5.

The COVID-19 constraint has its way of pushing the photographer into other aspects and challenges that can be just as rewarding and productive. As for these shots here, the images were captured with the Zuiko OM 100mm f/2.8.
