'A fun project to get your creative juice flowing when things are looking down and out'

Instead of fretting away the time and resources available during these trying times of the COVID-19 stay-at-home pandemic confinement, it is time for photographers like you and me to get our creative juice going. While shooting indoors or at home may just be the right tonic for you, don't just stop there. Look around, at different things, other alternatives, as there are always other options you can have fun getting involved with.

A good fun project I am doing right now is to create the shared Analog Diary Picture Book as a project on Google Photos image sharing platform. The idea here is, instead of having a jumble of random images just and spattered all over the pages, Google Photos gives you the easy option of creating albums based on an ascending or descending date-time sort.

This is the option I opted for the basics of the album, plus the ability to use text breaks to segregate the image selection and display.

Date-Timed Annotated Thematic Image Triptychs

What eventually materialized out of the trials and error concepts I started on, is a date-time sequence of annotated thematic image triptychs image album, a depository for my archived 35mm film camera images which were scanned for the original film negatives.

Simply said, what I am doing is an album with images displayed as a set of three. The theme used is 'Date and Camera' and each group of images will be annotated with information on the date the image was taken and the camera, or camera and lens combination, used.

Thematic Images

Images are grouped together to form a visual storyboard depicting a happening, an event, a location, or just anything that would be worthy of record, taken with a specific camera, or camera and lens combo, over a specific date or time duration.

Date-Time Sequencing

I started the album by first importing the images which have been predated with the date-time stamp on the day the image was taken, and on the 'Edit Album' options for Google Photos, using the 'Sort by Oldest First' sequence.

A Triptych Display

A sequence of three images per post, displayed as a triptych, is optimum to depict the story, event, or happening. A pair of 2 (two) images is grossly insufficient to convey the meaning of the post, while a collection with more than 3 (three) images is simply overdoing it.

A Long-Term Project

While the album may start off on a huff of an idea, or an evolution from a confined time slot, setting it up as a long-term project, with continuous updating of images including the current and latest, will ensure the continuity of the project to go well past and long after the current confinement we are in is over.

The album is as good a self-check as any, detailing the style or genre of photography you are interested in at each specific time of your career, or timeline, and camera brand and model you are using, which will eventually a good storybook to read and to read to family, friends, or even the forthcoming generation.
