One of the delights for an older or legacy camera and lens enthusiast interested in vintage aesthetics is to end up with a kit that includes a vintage or retro digital camera from the early 2000s, say a Nikon D200 (2005), paired with an equally vintage legacy prime, say a Nikon AI-S Nikkor 85mm f/2 (1981).

Though the Nikon D200 itself is not a classic, its 20-year-old CCD sensor technology is known to offer a unique, film-like aesthetic and excellent color rendition that is highly valued, and the AI-S Nikkor 85mm f/2, a compact, lightweight vintage lens and a favored portrait lens, is renowned for its sharpness, cool color rendering, and creamy bokeh that performs well even at wide open.

Historically, the Nikon AI-S Nikkor 85mm f/2 (an update of the Nikkor AI 85mm f/2, introduced earlier in 1971) is part of the lens ensemble for Nikon F3 (with AI-S compliance), FE2, FM2, and later FA series cameras. The D200, on the other hand, with its robust magnesium alloy body and filmic CCD sensor output, is the workhorse that bridges the gap between Nikon's lower-end consumer models and the flagship D2X.

The AI-S Nikkor 85mm f/2 is a 5-element in 5-group optical design with 7 rounded blades, an all-metal barrel, and a high-precision helicoid with an aperture range from f/2 to f/22, a minimum focusing distance of 0.85 meters, measures 63mm in diameter and 52.5mm in length, accepts 55mm filters, and weighs 310 grams.

Its 'rabbit ears' coupling and AI-S metering ridge allow the lenses to be used in program, shutter-priority, aperture-priority, and fully manual exposure modes on virtually all Nikon F-mount cameras, both film and digital.

On the D200, the AI-S Nikkor 85mm f/2 is equivalent to a 127.5mm lens on a full-frame camera, a versatile telephoto prime highly revered for portrait, event and stage, landscape and cityscape, as well as macro and close-up photography.

The lens is a perfect fit on the D200, which has an AI aperture indexing ring that allows lenses configured in the camera's "Non-CPU Lens Data" menu to be used on all the camera's metering modes (including Matrix metering).

Nikon's Matrix Metering, incidentally, is an advanced, default exposure mode that analyzes the entire scene—brightness, color, contrast, and distance - using a multi-zone sensor and a database of thousands of scenarios to determine the optimal exposure. The matrix mimics human perception, often automatically applying the Zone System to prevent overexposure of highlights or underexposure of shadows in complex lighting situations.

The Nikon D200, launched in 2005, is a very well-built and robust DSLR camera with a magnesium alloy chassis, environmental seals, and an excellent user interface. The camera is fitted with a 10.2MP CCD sensor, a shutter speed range from 30 to 1/8,000 seconds, an ISO range from 100 to 1,600, a top LCD panel for display of operating parameters, a 2.5 inch 230,00 pixels rear LCD, 7-area AF, and operates in Program, Shutter priority, Aperture priority, and Manual modes. Images are captured in JPEG and RAW (NEF).

The Nikon Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/2, a classic manual focus portrait lens that has earned a devoted following among vintage lens enthusiasts, was introduced in 1981 as an upgrade to the earlier 1977 AI version, and stayed in production until 1995.

Both versions share the same optical formula of 5 elements in 5 groups, with the Ai-S version featuring improved coatings with a distinctive pinkish cast on the front element, as opposed to the greenish coating of its predecessor. As part of its historical development, the lens was created to replace the discontinued Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 (K).

The lens follows Nikon's traditional approach of all-metal and glass construction typical of that era, a solid metal body with a wide, checkered focusing ring that operates smoothly and allows for end-to-end focusing without needing to readjust your grip. The aperture ring is particularly noteworthy, often described as "probably the smoothest" among vintage Nikon manual focus lenses, with positive clicks and buttery smooth operation all the way on the aperture ring.

Physical attributes of the lens include a compact form factor, which is 61mm in length and 60mm in diameter, a weight of around 310 grams, which makes the 85mm a remarkably compact lens, roughly the size of most other 50mm lenses of the era, and significantly smaller than competing 85mm options. The lens accepts 52mm filters and normally comes with an optional HS-10 lens hood.

The focusing mechanism of the Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/2 features a 170-degree focus throw on the Ai-S version, which is shorter than the 255-degree throw of the original AI version, making it faster to focus while maintaining precision. The lens focuses down to a minimum distance of 0.85 meters.

Olympus PEN E-P5, Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/2

On the Olympus PEN E-P5, with a focal length equivalent to a 170mm tele on a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp across the frame when stopped down slightly, accentuated by its almost perfectly flat field at portrait distances, a characteristic that is one of the lens's strengths, aside from its color accuracy and contrast. The lens features a 7-blade diaphragm that may tend to produce somewhat angular bokeh balls rather than perfectly circular ones.

I am going for a break here, away from film photography, but not for too long, though, as the interest is still strong in my heart and in my veins. The reason? The photo lab nearest to my place is closing its doors, and I am not keen enough, at least currently, to create a new travel route to the next nearest lab.

Taken in a rush, these parting shots were with the Nikon F301 and Nikkor 85mm f/2.

When fitted to a 2x crop-sensor Olympus PEN E-P5, a Nikkor 85mm f/2, as done here, the lens now has an effective focal length of 170mm. This fitting advances the lens to that of a medium telephoto lens, and this calls for a different way of handling the lens altogether.

A longer focal length means a narrower depth of field, and it can be difficult to get your focus spot on, where even a slight change in camera position can cause blurriness. You will need to put your camera on a tripod when going for that super steady shot.

A genre where you can hand-hold this lens/camera combination, with the lens at its widest aperture, and with a shutter speed fast enough to avoid blurring, is in the motorsports arena, something that is always on my mind to try out. While you are there, add the 'panning' technique to your skills, and bring your photography to another level.

Olympus PEN E-P5, Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/2

The Ai version of the Nikkor 85mm f/2 telephoto lens was introduced in 1977 and continued till the Ai-S version, which was introduced in late 1981. There is little difference in the specifications of these two series. Both versions are solidly built; the quality feel is all over, and using the lens is always a delight.
