It took me another short walk around the city on a very bright and sunny morning to convince myself that the Konica KD-30M, a compact vintage camera with a 3.3MP CCD sensor, has what it takes to be prized by collectors for its compact retro aesthetics reminiscent of Konica’s APS film cameras, straightforward shooting style, and early-2000s "digicam quality" images.

The KD-30M, introduced by Konica in 2002, features a 5.1mm fixed-focus lens (equivalent to a 34mm wide-angle on a full-frame camera) with 4x digital zoom, an optical viewfinder, a 1.6-inch TFT LCD, and a built-in flash. The aperture range of the lens is typically from f/2.8 to f/8.

The point-and-shoot autoexposure camera comes with a mechanical shutter speed range of 1/4 to 1/1000 second, and 1/1000 second electronic; ISO sensitivity at 100 to 200;  a 4× digital zoom lens with two-step manual zoom adjustment; and a pop-up electronic flash with Auto, Red-Eye Reduction, Night Scene, Fill-in, and Flash-off modes. The camera measures 94 x 66 x 41 mm and weighs 140 grams, powered by 2 x AA batteries (or compatible CR‑V3 lithium pack).

Images are recorded at 2560 x 1920 pixels (via interpolation), 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, and 1280 x 960 pixels on the camera's 16MB internal memory and SD card. Focusing distances can be set to normal focus for 0.8 meters to infinity and to macro mode for distances down to 0.2 meters.

Camera control is enabled by a single mode dial on top of the camera, which can be set to Shooting, Playback, Movie Clip, and Setup modes. Icon display on the LCD screen includes Battery Status, Focus Range, Digital Zoom, Working Mode, Flash Mode, White Balance, Image Quality, Image Size, Exposure, and Date.

One minor discomfort I had with the camera is the Exposure Compensation setting, which is not recorded to memory. The setting has to be done manually each time the camera is turned on, which may lead to memory lapses and missed shots.

A way out of this predicament is to shoot with the camera's autoexposure mode and post-process the images with adjustments to Auto Tone Correction, Crop, Tilt Adjustment, Tone Curve, Brightness and Contrast, Hue and Saturation, Sharpness and Blur, and Unsharp Mask on the image editor.

Peer reviews indicate that the camera's performance is limited by its slow-paced (ala using film) shooting and poor low-light performance. Images in bright and sunny locations, as seen here, can still claim the fame for the nostalgic "digicam" aesthetics, with vibrant 2000s-style images in punchy colors.

Enjoying the tactile experience and the nostalgia of a slow-paced image-making sequence, at a tourist spot in the city, on a vintage Konica KD-30M, an autoexposure digital compact camera introduced by Konica in 2002.

The camera features a 3.3MP CCD sensor and a fixed-focus 5.1mm f/2.9 lens, which is equivalent to a 34mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Images are recorded at 2560 x 1920 pixels via interpolation, or at 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, and 1280 x 960 pixels, and saved to the camera's 16MB of internal memory or SD cards. Movie clips are saved at 320 x 240 pixels in 10-second steps with Audio.

The camera, best enjoyed as if you are taking pictures on film with an analog camera, is, by modern standards, very slow with its image capture and recording lag. The adage to remember, when using the camera, is, "All quick shots will always end with fuzzy images".

In good daylight, images, especially at the camera's highest pixel count, are reasonably sharp and colorful, with a distinct, nostalgic aesthetic reminiscent of CCD images from the 2000s, inherently suitable only for small prints and web use.

The camera itself, though, is very simple and easy to use. It comes with a Mode Dial with settings for Shooting, Playback, Movie Clip, and Setup modes, a mechanical and electronic shutter speed with a range from 1/4 to 1/1000 second, ISO sensitivity from 100 to 200, an optical viewfinder, a built-in electronic flash, and an 80,000-dot 1.6-inch TFT LCD screen.

Other adjustments to the camera settings are made using the Menu and LCD buttons, as well as the Joystick Pad on the back of the camera. The Camera Setup includes an 8-line menu for options like Beep, Power Off, Date Stamp, Date Type, Date Set, Quick View, Language, and Reset.

Menu items and adjustment settings for Shooting, Playback, and Video Clip modes are just as simple, straightforward, and easy to learn. For fun, the camera is available at very low prices on auction listings. It measures 94 x 66 x 41 mm, weighs 140 grams, and is powered by 2 x AA batteries.

Square cut images from a casual city walk with the 2002 Konica Genba Kantoku Digital DG-2, a specialized, rugged, and all-weather vintage digital camera designed primarily for the construction industry and site documentation, which was spawned as the DG-1 (1998), DG-2 (2002), and DG-3 (2003).

The series was introduced as a follow-up to its equally successful 35mm film sibling series, the Konica Genba Kantoku 28WB (and 28WB ECO), which was released earlier in the 1990s.

The DG-2 features a 1/2-inch 2.1-megapixel CCD sensor, a fixed 5.8mm f/2.8 Hexanon lens (equivalent to a 38mm lens on a full frame camera), with 2.5x digital zoom, a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters, an optical viewfinder, a built-in flash, an LCD panel for camera status display, and a 1.8-inch TFT LCD screen.

The camera has a shutter speed range from 2 seconds to 1/750 seconds, is powered by 4 AA batteries (NiMH recommended), measures 139 x 77 x 53 mm, and weighs 425 grams. Images are recorded at resolutions of 1600x1200, 1280x960, or 640x480 and saved to CompactFlash cards.

With its rubberized body ruggedized against dust, dirt, water (JIS grade 7), and shock, the cult vintage favorite appeals to enthusiasts not only for its good look, simple operation even with gloved hands, but also for its early CCD image aesthetics.

Despite its age, the attractive and stunning autoexposure point-and-shoot is a pleasure to use and easy to carry around. It is never a let-down when seen in public, as the camera seems to have the ability to blend itself seamlessly with its peers among the crowd.

Image updates with the Konica Genba Kantoku Digital DG-2 (Digital Genba Kantoku DG-20), a very likeable 'CCD Resurgence' digital from 2002, part of Konica's 'site supervisor' 35mm film and CCD digital camera series designed for tough construction environments.

The Genba Kantoku (Site Supervisor) series is known for being waterproof, dustproof, and shock-resistant, with simple controls suitable for tough conditions and easy glove operation.

The Digital DG-2, with its rubberized skin over a heavy-duty and weather-resistant body, features a 2MP CCD sensor, a fixed f/2.8 autofocus lens equivalent to a 38mm on a full-frame camera, and records images at 1600x1200, 1280x960, or 640x480 resolutions on CF cards.

The camera has an automatic exposure system, comes with a shutter speed range from 2 to 1/750 seconds, an optical finder, an LCD panel, a 1.8-inch TFT LCD screen, and is powered by 4 AA batteries.

The DG-2 updates the DG-1, which was introduced earlier in 1998, and was later replaced by the Konica Digital 現場監督 (Genba Kantoku) DG-3Z in 2003. The DG-2 measures 139 x 77 x 53 mm, and weighs 425 grams.

Being early in the years of digital development, the DG-2 does not have a video mode. It does, however, operates with in record and playback mode, with setup and edits, and flash cycle selection.
