The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, an ultra-compact pancake prime lens designed specifically for Canon APS-C DSLR cameras, provides a field of view equivalent to a 40mm (38.4mm to be exact) lens on a full-frame camera, which offers a natural perspective similar to what the human eye sees.

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM was released in 2014 and comes with an aspheric lens element to reduce aberrations, specialized coatings to minimize ghosting and flare, a 7-blade circular iris, a close focusing distance of 0.16m, a fast f/2.8 aperture, and STM autofocus.

The lens, often quoted as the "sweet-spot for street Photography", is widely regarded as one of the most portable and affordable lenses in the EF-S lineup, making it a favorite for street photography, travel, and everyday use.

Canon EOS Kiss X3, EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

Due to its natural field of view, which closely resembles what the human eye sees, the focal length is particularly well-suited for street photography. The focal length enables a less intrusive capture of scenes while maintaining a good balance between capturing details and including context.

Cameras and Lenses: Images with a Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, an exceptional pancake lens known for its ultra-portable design, and sharp optics, a compact and lightweight setup with a 'sweet spot' 38mm full-frame equivalent lens on the EOS Kiss Digital X.

While not wanting my GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) obsession to spiral out of control, I recently reverted to a low-cost 10.1MP CMOS APS-C sensor Canon EOS Kiss Digital X (Digital Rebel XTi / EOS 400D) from 2006, mounted with a Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM from 2014, for a shoot and to experience what the 40mm, often praised as the 'sweet spot' focal length, is all about.

The 40mm is gaining a lot of attention among photo enthusiasts as a focal length choice for a unique image blend that can be both contextual and isolative.

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, an ultra-slim 'pancake' prime designed for APS-C EOS cameras, was introduced with the launch of the compact body EOS Kiss X7 (Rebel SL1) in 2014, with key features that includes a smooth Stepped Motor (STM) quiet enough to be well accepted for movie recording, a close minimum focusing distance of 0.16 meters, and a small size that makes it the thinnest EF-S lens available.

Canon EOS Kiss Digital X, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The lens is one of three EF-S lenses produced by Canon (others are the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM and EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM). It is a 6-element in 4 groups, with a 7-rounded blade design, measures 69.2mm in diameter and 23.7mm in length, weighs 125 grams, and takes 49mm filters. The lens is now out of production.

On the Kiss Digital X, which has a 1.6x crop sensor, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 is directly equivalent to a 38.4 mm lens on a full-frame camera. The focal length provides the flexibility to allow photographers to capture detailed shots and connect with their subjects while still maintaining a sense of place. Its relatively compact size and unobtrusive nature make it also a great everyday go-to lens.

Unique to the 40mm focal length is the nomenclature given to it as a 'sweet spot' lens, when generally, the term is given to recognize the specific aperture for achieving maximum sharpness with lenses. The 40mm focal length provides a field-of-view with natural perspective that closely mimics the way the human eye sees, with the ability to provide a good balance for both wide scenes and more detailed shots. The lens is a very versatile choice for various genres of photography, including street photography, documentary work, travel, everyday candid shots, and architectural photography.

The Kiss Digital X, a 2006 update of the Kiss Digital N (EOS Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D) released earlier in 2005, is an entry-level digital SLR camera that offers a good balance of image quality, responsiveness, and user-friendly features. The camera has a 10.1MP CMOS sensor, a newly introduced integrated dust-reduction system, a 230,000-dot 2.5-inch LCD screen, improved buffer performance, a 9-point AF system inherited from the higher-end EOS 30D, and a clear and concise menu system that enhances the camera's ease of use.

Although short on advanced features such as live view, video capture, and higher ISO performance compared to later EOS models, the Kiss Digital X is a solid choice for beginner photographers (and vintage enthusiasts) seeking a low-cost platform to start with, or to experience the Canon EOS digital pedigree. The camera is robustly built and is known for its solid image quality, and despite being nearly 20 years old, the camera I had still functions perfectly well with its silky-smooth shutter actuation and near-inaudible reflex mirror flap.

Cameras and Lenses: Images with an early digital-era Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, praises for its ultra-slim pancake design, and featherlight weight, on a vintage Canon EOS 400D.

For whatever it was, I was recently gifted with a beat-up and what looked like a run-down Canon EOS 400D by close family kin, with the LCD screen frosted to almost a no-go with its display and showing other ailments in need of TLC.

The camera came with an attached BG-E3 battery grip, sans the pair of batteries it needs to run, no charger, and an off-brand monster of a 70-300mm lens, which turned out to be non-functional and was kept aside.

It was another week of waiting for replacement batteries and a charger to arrive, so the camera could be tested to see if it was running.

With the batteries, an alternative lens (an EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM for the equivalent of a 40mm prime on a 35mm full-frame camera), and a CF card installed, the camera sputtered back to life and showed all the signs, except for the LCD display, of a perfectly working unit, which it is.

The entry-level Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi in North America, EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan) digital SLR camera, a relatively compact and lightweight successor of the Canon EOS 350D, was launched by Canon in 2006. The camera, great for travel and a light-pack need, has a 10.1MP CMOS APS-C sensor, a nine-point autofocus system, a deeper and more comfortable grip than the 350D, a retractable auto pop-up flash, and on the display system, a wide-viewing angle 230,00 pixel 2.5-inch LCD screen sans the top status screen as seen on previous models. The 400D uses the same NB-2LH Lithium battery pack as the 350D.

Technical specs for the camera include an electronically-controlled focal plane shutter with a speed range from 30 to 1/4000 second, soft-touch electromagnetic shutter, ISO sensitivity at 100 to 400 in Basis Zone mode, and from 100 to 1600 in Creative Zone mode, 35-zone full aperture TTL metering with Evaluative, Partial, and Center-weighted options, a 10-second delay self-timer, and as with the 350D, the 400D is also endowed with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System which incorporates an ultrasonic self-cleaning sensor unit. The EOS 400D was succeeded by the 450D (Rebel XSi in North America, EOS Kiss X2 in Japan) in 2008.

Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The functions and features of the 400D are easy to use for new users while offering creative freedom for serious users. Exposure modes include Program AE (Full Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night Portrait, Flash Off, Program), Shutter-Priority AE, Aperture-Priority AE, Depth-of-Field AE, Manual Exposure, and E-TTL II Autoflash. The 400D also has a picture style selection for image render pre-sets for Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome emulations.

Back to the camera in hand, I resorted to using it the way SLR film cameras before the onset of the digital were used - set the mode dial to Program AE (sounds familiar?), frame the scene, release the shutter, wish for the best, and move on to the frame. No 'chimping (the habit of checking the image on the camera LCD after every shot is taken) either, the word has not been invented in the film photography world, and is not part of the vocabulary. The habit does not exist when shooting film; images are only viewable after the negative film has been sent to the lab for processing.

Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

Though the try-out was done half-heartedly, a dry run to see if the camera was still capable of doing what it was supposed to, the images (as seen here) on the 10.1MP CMOS sensor, post-edited and framed on the desktop to the 4:5 and 5:4 image aspects, are excellent, true to the claim of what the EOS 400D is capable of. A fully working unit of the model could very well be the recommended choice for vintage enthusiasts looking at the low end of the auction market to get themselves into the genre.

Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

Enough said. I might come back to the EOS 400D at a later date and do a real film photography style street shoot, or any other genre I am working in, with it. In the meantime, I have another vintage enthusiast's pick, the Canon EOS 500D (EOS Rebel T1i, EOS Kiss X3), to enjoy the time with.

The XPan Format, Images In "65:24" Aspect Ratio

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Panoramas: Emulating the 65:24 image aspect ratio, a distinct cinematic format, commonly referred to as the Xpan format from 3:2/4:3 standard images.
<< Click on images for enlarged Lightbox display >>

The XPan format, with images in the "65:24" aspect, is the format captured by the Hasselblad XPan, a dual-format auto-exposure 35mm film camera capable of capturing images both in the standard 23x36mm image, as well as in full panorama 24x65mm images.

The camera was introduced in 1998, in collaboration with Fuji, which also introduced its own version of the camera, the Fujifilm XT-1.

Interestingly, the 65mm width of the image format is similar to that of a medium format image, giving the notion that the XPan is also a medium format camera.

The XPan was made available with three primes: 30mm, 45mm, and 90mm manual focus lenses.

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The 'cropped-frame' method to emulate the panoramic image aspect was once the selling point for 35mm film cameras, available in both compact AF and SLR cameras. The feature uses a pair of blinds, either fixed or operable for dual-format cameras, that crop the 24x36mm picture frame of the camera to a horizontal 17x36mm, or the '2.7:1' image aspect ratio. The images are truncated at the top and bottom of the picture frame.

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The image crop options are also available on selected models of current digital cameras, where the images are cropped electronically to 4:3 or 3:2, depending on the initial format of the camera's sensor, the TV-oriented 16:9, and the 1:1 square cuts.

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

Instagram influencers sometimes crop images to the 3:1 image aspect ratio before cropping them further to 3 square-cuts for a horizontal display on their image album. Shooting in the panorama or XPan mode, however, does call for a creative approach with both framing and visualizing options already in mind.

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

These images were initially captured on the 6MP CMOS Canon EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel in the US, EOS Kiss Digital in Japan), the first entry-level digital SLR camera that Canon introduced to the consumer market in 2003. The EOS 300D was also the first to be fitted with the EF-S lens mount system, a design specific to Canon's APS-C digital SLR camera series.

Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EOS 300D, Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

For the test, the 300D was mounted with a Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, and the images were later edited and cropped to the '65:24' image aspect ratio on the desktop editor. While Canon EOS cameras with EF-S lens mounts (APS-C sensors) can be used with both EF and EF-S lenses, full-frame Canon EOS cameras will not accept EF-S lenses.
