Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Living Colors

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18
CCD Resurgence: Images with an 8.4MP CCD Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 CCD - high-quality, low-noise, and almost film-like.

Top and backlighted images from just outside my door were captured with the vintage Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, a super zoom bridge camera with a 1/2.5" 8.3MP CCD sensor, an 18x (28-504mm equivalent) zoom lens, and is also capable of doing images with a 1cm macro mode. The camera was launched in 2007 and has a 188,000 pixels EVF and A 2.5" 207,000 pixels LCD monitor, switchable to function only alternatively. The function, which can be confusing at times, is controlled by a button switch located near the thumb rest area (when holding the camera up to the eye) on the upper part of the back of the camera.

The camera itself, compact and lightweight, weighs 360 grams without battery and measures 117.6 x 75.3 x 88.2 mm. The low pixel count from both the EVF and LCD monitor (by today's standards) is insufficient to give you a thorough image of the frame you are looking at, but believe me, the proof will be in the images themselves, which will blow your mind away. CCD sensor images have a following among photographers who prefer the images' different look and feel, which are high-quality, low-noise images that some say are almost film-like.

If you are wary about the ever-spiraling cost of film and the equally high cost of acquiring new high-end digital camera products, vintage cameras with CCD sensors are more than adequate to cater to your interest. Even though CCD sensors on digital cameras have virtually been replaced by CMOS sensors, there is still a following among photographers who prefer the images from these sensors that have a different look and feel, with some saying they are almost film-like. CCD sensors are more sensitive to dynamic range, and lower noise output, with more vibrant colors.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Up And Running Again

I

asked Bing to write me a fun story to read, and the AI language model came back with a story about a boy, Jack, who found a door on a magical tree. Jack opened the door and stepped inside, and to his surprise, he found himself in a magical world filled with talking animals, fairies, and other magical creatures.

Jack spent the next few days exploring this magical world, making new friends, and having all sorts of adventures. He even helped a group of fairies who were out looking for their lost treasures. Eventually, it was time for Jack to return home. He said goodbye to all of his new friends and promised to come back and visit soon. As he stepped out of the magical tree, he found himself back in his own world.

The story is reflective of me as well, as I went trudging through the storage bin and picked up the Lumix DMC-FZ18, last used 10 years back, put away because the battery was not holding its charge anymore.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

I ordered a pair of new batteries online, had the battery installed, and Walla!, the camera came back to life just like it was switched off only a few minutes ago. Took the camera out to the porch for the trial re-run, had the few shots post-processed on the digital tabletop, and went head over heels for the excellent quality images. Images like these are preferred by some photographers because of their look and feel, which are different from those of later digital cameras.

Is this my magical door, then? An opening to the days of the old, and a chance to re-live images captured with the CCD sensor? Let's stay on and find out what happens.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Colors II

CCD Resurgence: Throwback 2009, image making with an 8.3MP CCD Lumix DMC-FZ18, looking at images worth preserving, Part II.

Over and above the DMC-FZ8, which the DMC-FZ18 replaces, the 1/2.5-inch sensor enjoys a moderate increase in megapixel power from 7.3MP to 8.3MP. New features of the FZ18 include a dedicated AF/AE button, Face Detection, and a new Intelligent Auto mode that integrates Image Stabilization, Intelligent ISO, Face Detection, and Scene Detection into a 'Super' Auto Mode.

Form-factor-wise, the FZ18 retains Panasonic's tried-and-tested design formula established with the FZ7. Externally, it is very, very similar to the FZ8, albeit with minor facelifts that give the body a bit more curve. With its good ergonomics, SLR-like controls, and massive zoom range in a very compact package, the FZ18 was the one to look at.

The smallish dimensions do not deter the camera's handling. When held, the camera feels stable, safe, and solid, and the operation of the main controls is very easy. The excellent handling, along with the image stabilization and well-balanced design, makes the camera equally safe to use with one hand.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

As with the Panasonic Lumix series, which started with the FZ1 in 2002, the strength of the FZ18, aside from the 8.1MP sensor and an impressive array of functions and features that makes it the choice for a very intelligent bridge compact, is undoubtfully the image-stabilized 18x Leica zoom lens with an f/2.8 maximum opening covering a range from 28 to 500mm.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ18, besides the DMC-FX33 and DMC-FX55, was one of the first three Panasonic digital cameras to be introduced with the Face Detection feature. This feature detects up to 15 faces in a scene. Then it uses this information to set focus and exposure appropriately, is enabled automatically in portrait or baby scene modes, and can cope with moving subjects.

The second feature introduced was the 'Intelligent Auto' mode. This feature enables the camera to analyze the scene and select the scene mode (Portrait, Scenery, Macro, Night Scenery, or Night Portrait) automatically and activates the Panasonic FZ18's optical image stabilization, intelligent ISO, face detection, and continuous autofocus functions as necessary.

Other features of the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 include a 188,000 pixels electronic viewfinder, a 2.5-inch LCD display with a 207,000-pixel resolution,  ISO sensitivity to 1,600 (or 6,400 max. in high sensitivity mode), a range of creativity-friendly options including both aperture and shutter-priority plus a full manual mode, and up to fourteen scene modes to keep things going.

Images are stored in 27MB of built-in memory or on SD / MMC / SDHC cards in either JPEG or raw file formats (with a raw+JPEG option available). Power comes from a proprietary lithium-ion battery that provides enough power for 400 shots (CIPA standard). Connectivity options are NTSC / PAL video and USB, and bundled software includes Lumix Simple Viewer, PhotofunStudio viewer, SILKYPIX Developer Studio 2.1SE, ArcSoft MediaImpression, and ArcSoft PanoramaMaker.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Colors I

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is available in both silver and black. While the black version may look more professional and business-like, mine was, however, in the elegant silver, acquired from the auction market, where color was not the choice.

The front plane of the camera is dominated by the aspherical Leica Vario Elmarit lens that has a killer 18x zoom range (504mm eq.) and a maximum opening of f/2.8. The lens has a 55mm thread on the outer casing for wide-angle or telephoto conversion attachments and a 46mm thread on the inner barrel for filters or polarizers.

A large rubberized handgrip complements the front of the camera. This makes it possible to use the camera single-handedly if you so wish, but in the case of sports or action photography, or when using a longer zoom range, that might be the way to prevent camera shake. Powering up the camera takes about 1.7 seconds, which might be especially quick in certain circumstances.

The DMC-FZ18 is light enough to carry anywhere, and it rests naturally in the palm of your hand. Autofocus is fast and precise, and a bit slower at the longer focal length. Exposure is spot on most of the time, with a slight tendency to underexposure if bright areas dominate the scene. With its 41 intermediate steps, the zoom lever works very smoothly, and it only takes 3 seconds to go from wide-angle to telephoto.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Black & White I

The DMC-FZ18 was part of Panasonic's popular range of compact superzoom Lumix cameras. It was introduced barely half a year after the launch of the DMC-FZ8. Being almost identical to the former, the FZ18 came with a bigger zoom, more pixels, and a range of new features.

The camera came with a bigger 18x zoom lens (28-504mm equivalent.), more pixels with 8.3 MP on its 1/2.5-inch sensor, and features that include a dedicated AF/AE button, Face Detection, Intelligent Auto mode with integrated Image Stabilization, Intelligent ISO, Face Detection and Scene Detection modes.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

The Lumix DMC-FZ18 has a rather diminutive form factor. It does, however, look its part as it came fitted with a flower hood. It feels stable, safe, and solid in your hands, and operating the main controls (zoom and shutter release) is equally easy. The excellent handling, balance, and weight, with the support of image stabilization, make it even more comfortable to use the camera with one hand.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18

The top-of-the-hill aura of the camera was, of course, the superb Leica DC Vario-Elmarit f/2.8~4.2 lens, where images remained exceptionally sharp and clear even at the extended zoom limits. Exposure modes available on the camera were Programmed AE with shutter speeds at 1-1/2000 second, Aperture Priority AE / Shutter Priority AE at 8-1/2000 second, Manual at 60-1/2000 second, and Starry Sky Mode at 15, 30, and 60 seconds.
