Found Slides, Converted to Black-and-White

Vintage analog color and black-and-white slide images from way back in the 1980s, scanned, edited and post-processed for enhanced web publishing.

Another batch of found slides, 30+ years old, shot in color, but for this session, the images have been scanned and converted to black-and-white with the Monochrome & Sepia tool, and tweaked for Auto Tone Correction, Contrast, Tone Curve, Brightness & Contrast, Hue & Saturation, Unsharp Mask and Noise Reduction, on the image editor Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3).

Why? Well, for one, the originals are slightly faded and the colors are off and could be a lame sight to see these slides in their original disposition.

Black-and-white images, with their broad tonal ranges and deep rich blacks, relax you and sets your mind into the subconscious, deciphering the image is then simply visual impact and resonance. Light, form, and texture are more compelling in an image rather than the hues of the subject matter, and color serves more as a distraction than the means to an end.

Cameras and Lenses: Images with an M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 EZ, celebrated as the world's slimmest pancake zoom lens, a standard 28-84mm full-frame zoom equivalent on the Olympus Pen E-PM2.

It must have been the vintage digital GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and whoa! I got myself an Olympus E-PM2 ILC and an M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm 1:3.5~5.6 EZ to add to my collection. Launched in 2013, the E-PM2 was an update to the E-PM1 (2011), a compact with the smallest and lightest footprint of any Olympus ILC.

The camera features a 16MP CMOS sensor, the same as found on the E-PL5 and OM-D E-M5, often acclaimed as a class leader in image quality. It also includes a 3.0-inch touch screen, two additional buttons, a small built-in grip on the front panel, and weighs 269 grams with a battery and memory card.

The M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5~5.6 EZ, equivalent to a 28-82mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera, is a very versatile lens, recommended as an all-rounder with a zoom range good for telling photo stories of a subject you are in, portraiture, landscape, and whatever you have in mind.

The 8-element in 5 groups (with 1 Super HR, 1 ED, and 3 aspherical elements) lens has a 5-blade diaphragm, a minimum focusing distance of 0.2 meters at 14mm, and 0.25 meters at 42mm, a minimum aperture of f/16, takes 37mm filters, and weighs 93 grams.

Nokia Asha 300, Mellow Yellow

Another set of crisp and colorful images with the vintage Nokia Asha 300 cell phone camera, launched in 2011, with only a 5MP rear camera, no front camera, or flash support. I am still using the camera on the Nokia Asha, albeit occasionally, for the gorgeous images it will capture, and the ease of carrying it around.

At 85 grams of body weight and a 113mm x 50mm x 13mm thick dimension, the Asha 300 is the smallest, slimmest, and lightest I have used.

Fully charged, the battery will still give up to a week on standby time, and taking photos does not drain the battery too much either. The Nokia Asha is my go-to camera when going out for a quick dash or when traveling light.

Olympus Pen E-P5, Cimko Compact 28mm f/2.8

Cameras and Lenses: Images with a legacy Cimko Compact 28mm f/2.8 wide-angle, a vintage, third-party all-metal build manual-focus wide-angle prime, a standard normal 56mm full-frame equivalent on the Olympus Pen E-P5.

Seems that the Cimko Compact 28mm f/2.88 (also seen as Paragon PMC, Beroflex, Ensinor, Clubman), a 25cm close focusing all-metal construction, was made by Cima Kogaku, who had a patented system that allowed the lenses to be built with common bodies fitted with appropriate lens mounts.

The lenses were mostly sold OEM under a variety of different brands. In the UK, for example, they were sold by Photax as Super-Paragon PMC lenses, while Tokyo Kogaku sold them as AM Topcor lenses for their Topcon RM300 camera. Cima Kogaku also sold lenses directly under the Cimko brand.

On the 2x crop sensor Micro 4/3 cameras, the Cimko Compact is equivalent to a 56mm focal length lens on a 35mm full-frame camera, a focal length still considered to be within the 'standard normal' lens category. Others may categorise it as a long standard or a 'short telephoto.'
