Setting IBIS For Legacy Lenses On Olympus-Pen E-PM2
Cameras and Lenses: Setting up IBIS (in-body image stabilization) for adapting legacy vintage manual focus lenses and shooting in manual mode on the MFT (Micro Four Thirds) Olympus PEN E-PM2.

I am using the Olympus E-PM2 and a SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 combo here, taking evaluative shots in the half-frame format (3:4 image aspect ratio) for my online posts.
The SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8, produced by Pentax from 1976 to 1984 as part of the lens series for Pentax M 35mm SLR film cameras, is a true pancake with 5 elements in 4 groups and only 18mm deep. The lens has a good reputation and comes with strong credentials, scoring 8.1 for sharpness, 8.3 for aberrations, 7.4 for bokeh, 7.8 for handling, and 7.8 for value on PentaxForums.
On the E-PM2, the lens is equivalent to an 80mm short tele on a full-frame camera, a good candidate for photography genres including portraiture, street photography, product and still life, landscape and nature, and event shoots.
Digital cameras with an IBIS (In-Body-Image-Stabilizer) system, like the E-PM2, do not take too easily to the lens, and other accessories, such as the lens, do not have electrical contacts to communicate with the camera. Without this connectivity, the camera will not register the lens focal length, and the IBIS system will be ineffective.
For the system to work with legacy lenses, the lens focal length must be registered with the camera's registry index, and done manually for each lens. On the Olympus E-PM2, which has an archaic menu system, the register is nestled rather intricately a few layers down the menu interface.
To get the lens focal length to be registered on the E-PM2's registry index, do the following:

- Turn the camera 'On', press the 'Menu' button, access the 'Setup' menu, and press 'OK',
- On the next screen, use the Down Arrow on the Joystick Pad to navigate down to the 'Shooting Menu 2' menu item,
- From the 'Shooting Menu 2' screen, use the Right and Down Arrows on the Joystick Pad to navigate to the 'Image Stabilizer' menu item.
- From the 'Image Stabilizer' screen, use the Right Arrow on the Joystick Pad to navigate to the next screen, and use the Right Arrow on the Joystick Pad to select 'Still Picture', and you will access the 'Still-I.S.' screen.
- From the 'Still-I.S.' screen, use the Right Arrow on the Joystick Pad again to access the 'Image Stabilizer - Focal Length' screen.
- Use the Up/ Down Arrow on the Joystick Pad to select the focal length (from 8 to 1000mm) you want to set the IBIS to, and press 'OK' to set the selection.
- Half-press the shutter button to return the camera to image capture mode.

SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8, Random
Cameras and Lenses: Random images with the SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8, a highly regarded vintage legacy MF telephoto lens introduced in the late 1970s, a 200mm equivalent tele lens on the Olympus E-P5.

Random images to finish off my stint with the SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8, a very well-built lens with a lightweight body. I have also used the lens previously on the analog Pentax MZ-7, and now on the digital Pen E-P5.
With an equivalent of a 200mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera, the SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 is about the longest focal length I was able to shoot with the camera handheld.

A fun and easy-to-use 35mm SLR film camera kit that you want to look at if you're starting to look at film photography is the combination of a Pentax MV1 SLR film camera and the SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 lens.
The camera/lens combination is very compact and equally lightweight, with the 18mm thick lens weighing only 110 grams and a camera body that weighs 425 grams without batteries.
In use, the camera kit is not only well suited to hiking or street shooting but is equally suitable as a do-it-all general-use lens for snapshots, family outings, travel photos, urban scenes, and architectural images.
The 5-elements in 4-group SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8, produced from 1976 to 1984, was the smallest SLR lens that Pentax ever made. A seven-layer SMC coating process that Pentax started using to coat the lens element in 1971 produces images that are sharp and clear, and mid-tone contrast that is always pleasing to look at.

The Pentax MV1, an update to the Pentax MV, which was launched a year earlier, is an aperture-priority 35mm SLR film camera that was a product from the 1980s. It has a shutter speed range from 1 to 1/1000 second, which is set automatically by the camera, and an ISO speed range from 32 to 1600.

The camera is as good as any to start you off in film photography. It is a well-constructed camera, a smooth operator with a well-damped mirror flap action that produces little, if any, camera body shake. The compact and lightweight body is easily available on the auction market, most at very affordable prices, and has been known to be reliable and worth the keep.

I might not have done true justice to the SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 here. I had it mounted on the Pentax MZ-7, an excellent camera by itself, but mismanaged in the manual setting for the lens. This ended up with the camera/lens combo not working at its best, and I went through half of the film roll with that.
The SMC Pentax M 100mm f/2.8 is, however, a delight to use. It is compact, light, sharp, and solidly built, and enjoys an average user rating of 9.6 on PentaxForms.com. The lens has always stayed at the top of the enthusiast's choice.
The all-manual lens is of 5 elements in 5-group construction and comes with 5 aperture blades. Images, as you can see from these shots, are not as contrasty and can be boosted or adjusted with image processing.
At 100mm focal length, the SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 is a great lens for outdoor portraits and landscapes, and should be equally suited for traveling by its small and compact size. It has also been reported that, when used in the field, the lens has the potential for purple fringing issues in high-contrast situations.

This is the first time I am using the lens, and as I mentioned earlier, mounted on the Pentax MZ-7. Images were shot on an almost expired Kodak Colorplus 200 and were post-processed on Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3).

Sans the hustle and bustle of the inner city, the grind, and whine of electric motors, the surge of acceleration as the train leaves the station, the rattle, and skittle as the track rises and falls, the rocking and swaying on the bends, the hushed dead stops less than a minute away, and you are taking the ride, virtually in a world of your own.
These images were of the receding cityscape viewed from the windscreen of a driverless LRT coach as I was heading home after the day out with the SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 and the Pentax MX.
