Canon EOS Kiss X3, Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
The lens, a 6-element, 4-group design with 7 rounded aperture blades, has a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters, measures 68.2mm x 22.8mm in thickness, accepts 52mm filters, and weighs 130 grams. Autofocus is powered by a stepping motor (STM) for quiet and smooth continuous operation.
Acknowledged qualities of the lens include impressive center sharpness even wide open at f/2.8, with excellent edge-to-edge sharpness when stopped down to f/5.6. It also features smooth and near-silent continuous autofocusing, decent pseudo-macro shots at its closest focusing distance, satisfying background blur at f/2.8, and a surprisingly durable construction with a solid metal mount.
Though designed for full-frame cameras, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is equally compatible with all Canon APS-C DSLRs, and on the Canon EOS Kiss X3, which has a 1.6x crop sensor (common to Canon EOS APS-C DSLRs), the lens is equivalent to a 64mm prime, a focal length categorized as a short telephoto.
The lens, with the camera setup, is ideal for an inconspicuous, lightweight street photography kit, casual daily walk-arounds, and travel. The focal length also works as a flattering, distortion-free prime for half-body portraits.
For street and travel photography, the setup is compact enough to easily slip into a small bag or be carried around your neck all day without strain, small enough not to draw overawed attention, and inconspicuous enough for candid, natural shots of people and everyday life.
The setup is equally adept for short telephoto work and for an excellent, flattering focal length for head-and-shoulders or half-body portraits. The f/2.8 aperture is bright enough to blur out distracting backgrounds, and the lens itself is remarkably sharp, even when shot wide-open at f/2.8, for crisp facial features and clear eyes.
The Canon EOS Kiss X3 (EOS Rebel T1i in North America and EOS 500D in Europe), an entry‑level DSLR introduced in 2009, and still popular among enthusiasts and hobbyists as a vintage budget buy, The camera has a 15.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 image processor, a 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor, an ISO range from 100 to 3,200 (expandable to 6,400 and 12,800), and comes with early HD capability with 1080p full HD recording @ 20 fps.
Though short on modern amenities and functionalities (like autofocus tracking, high-speed shooting, and low-light performance), the Kiss X3 remains a fun and capable choice with beginners and enthusiasts, with its sharp, vintage-style images, warm, natural skin tones and rich colors, and its versatile Canon EF/EF-S lens mount.

Canon EOS Kiss X3, A Retro Look
The camera comes with a 3.0-inch 920,000-dot Clear View LCD monitor featuring a multi-layer coating that reduces reflections while protecting it against scratches and dirt, and shares a few features with the high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark II (movie mode, Live View, fast DIGIC 4 processor). Images are stored on SD/SDHC memory cards.
Technical specs include an electronically-controlled, focal-plane shutter with a total shutter speed range from 30 to 1/4000 second, with x/sync at 1/200 second, ISO sensitivity from 100 to 3200 (expandable up to 12800 equivalent), wide and selectable nine-point AF with center cross-type sensors, 35-zone TTL full-aperture metering with Evaluative, Partial, Spot, and Center-weighted average metering options, and continuous shooting of up to 3.4 fps.
The camera is fitted with the Canon EF-S lens mount system that can be used just as well with full-frame EOS EF lenses, and other OEM legacy lenses with easily available lens adapters.
Like most entry- and mid-level DSLRs, the Kiss X3 provides several auto shooting modes aimed at beginners, including portrait, landscape, close-up, sports, and night portrait and flash-off choices, complemented by manual and semi-automatic modes for users who want more advanced exposure control. The high-sensitivity, high-resolution sensor fitted to the Kiss X3 provides excellent image quality with rich color gradation.
The camera's DIGIC 4 image processor enhances processing speed and overall performance, allowing for better noise handling at higher ISO settings.
With a compact and lightweight body and easy access to PASM and Program AE exposure modes, the Kiss X3 renders image quality that is excellent and outstanding. The system is accentuated with Picture Styles that provide a quick and easy way to tweak the camera's JPEG images, and Auto Lighting Optimizer and Highlight Tone Priority that help to get the most out of the photos you capture. The camera is also fitted with a Live View mode that supports Face Detection technology, with improved focusing accuracy during live shooting
The Kiss X3, normally a low-end buy on the auction market, is highly recommended for newbies or those just starting out in digital photography. The camera itself is an update of the 12.2MP Kiss X2 (EOS Digital Rebel XSi, EOS 450D), launched in 2008, and was later superseded by the 18MP Kiss X4 (EOS Rebel T2i, EOS 550D), which was launched in 2010.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, City Green
I have had the well-used and slightly beat-up EOS 300D for quite some time now, and have been using it for potshots around the house and the adjoining community field. The camera and lens kit was light and compact enough, and carrying it around was not really a hassle.
One thing I noticed as I went through the shots was that the camera was quite heavy on the battery, which was already almost completely exhausted by the time I managed to get the final few shots in. Not too sure what the problem is; it could be the age of the camera itself, which is draining a lot more power than it should, or the original battery I was using that is not keeping its charge well. It was an excellent outing anyway, with the shots edited for the frames posted here.
The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, one of a pair of EFs that I have, is still in excellent shape, a favorite, and has always done well on each and every session that I had it mounted on the 300D. On the ASP-C sensor of the 300D, the 40mm STM is equivalent to a 64mm short tele on a full-frame 35mm camera, an excellent focal length that draws the view into a tighter composition.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, Ghostly Twilight
Not a planned night shot, but rather an impromptu "Program Mode" handheld twilight session. I am still all excited about having the vintage digital Canon EOS 300D, a 6.3-megapixel entry-level DSLR camera. When launched in 2002, the EOS 300D camera was the first DSLR to hit the market with a price tag below US $1000.
My take? Find an alternative to the ever-spiraling cost of continuing the hobby, as I have been doing in the past, in film photography. Am I getting what I am looking for? I am warming up to it, and it looks like it's going to be a big Yes!
I will have to forgo my love for film, though, and work on other challenges instead.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, First Impression
My new toy arrived in the mail last week. Thanks to a very conscientious seller, it was a complete body package with a strap, body cap, battery, new USB charger, 2GB CF memory card, card reader, and USB data transfer cable, all in excellent condition.
I had the battery charged, changed the strap to my favorite, mounted an EF 40mm F2.8 STM, which I had lying around for quite a while now, turned the camera on, and 'Hey Presto!', it's all go. Popped out of the front door, grabbed these few JPG shots, and had the images post-processed on my old digital image editing and management software.
Everything works great; I couldn't ask for more, really.
