The Sony DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6, introduced alongside the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 in 2006, is the standard 'kit' zoom for Sony Alpha APS-C (DT) bodies. This lightweight lens, originally designed by Konica-Minolta and rebadged by Sony. On the 1.5x crop sensor DSLR-A350, the lens provides a field of view equivalent to a 27–105mm focal range on a 35mm full-frame camera, a very versatile range that makes the lens usable for everyday candids and genres that include portraits, travel, landscapes, portraits, and close-ups.
The modest build quality and budget-level optical performance lens features an 11-element, 9-group design with a 7-blade diaphragm and an aperture range from f/3.5 at 18mm to f/5.6 at 70mm, extending to f/36. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.38 meters, measures 66mm in diameter and 77mm in length, weighs 235 grams, uses 55mm filters, and is supplied with a circular lens hood.
While the lens is not necessarily the fastest or highest quality in terms of optics or build, or the most expensive on the market, the all-purpose zoom may just be the right tonic for the beginner or new user the versatility and convenience as a starter lens, and the experience of having and a compact and lightweight compact (with the DSLR-A350) easy to lug around and to enjoy the enthusiasm with.
Reviews indicate that the 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 is an above-average performer, not exactly top-notch with ultra-sharp images, but with no significant flaws either. The autofocus can be a bit noisy, and shots are best at 50mm and ƒ/8. Seen here with the lens mounted on a Sony Alpha DSLR-A350, with which the lens is completely compatible, the compact and lightweight kit is easy to lug around to enjoy the enthusiasm with.

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A350, Sony's top-tier consumer digital SLR for 2008, features a high-resolution 14.2MP CCD sensor, Live View capability, a tilting 2.7-inch LCD, and an in-body sensor-shift image stabilization system that provides up to approximately 3.5 stops of stabilization with any attached lens.
When introduced to the market, the camera was a standout midrange DSLR with robust features, positioned between the entry-level A200/A300 and the prosumer A700 model. The model also boasts a fast autofocus system, good high ISO performance, and a user-friendly interface with features like a function guide display. And just as well, the A350 has a solid, well-built body with excellent battery life.
