The SMC Pentax-A 35–70mm f/4, quite a rarity among vintage zooms, is a compact, fixed-aperture standard zoom introduced by Pentax when it was launched alongside the Pentax Super A 35mm SLR film camera in 1983. While the A-series lenses were the first K-mount lenses from Pentax to be fitted with an 'A' setting on the aperture ring for full exposure control by the camera, the 35–70 mm f/4 is the only zoom from Pentax to have a constant f/4 aperture.

The lens is compatible with all Pentax K-mount cameras, including Series-A, Series-P, KA, KAF, and KAF2 bodies, and usable in Program, Aperture-Priority, and Shutter-Priority modes when the lens is set to the 'A' setting on these cameras.

The all-metal lens is a 'twin-ring' design (separate zoom and focus rings) with a 7-elements in 7 groups and a 6-blade diaphragm construction. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.25 meters, measures 65 × 80mm in length, weighs 330 grams, and accepts 58mm filters.

On the 1.5x crop sensor Pentax K-m (K2000 in the US), the 35-70mm zoom is equivalent to a 52.5-105mm zoom on a full frame camera, a range that is slightly beyond the classification of a standard normal, closer perhaps to a short telephoto zoom, versatile, well-suited for portraiture, street photography, travel, and candids in various settings from wider street scenes to more intimate close-ups.

With the consistent f/4 performance across the range, and without the need to frequently change lenses for different focal lengths, the lens has been cited for excellent sharpness, smooth handling, and versatility as a walk-around lens for APS-C digital SLR camera users. On PentaxForums, the lens enjoyed a rating of Sharpness @ 8.3, Aberrations @ 7.9, Bokeh @ 8.1, Handling @ 8.5, and Value @ 8.9.
