The Pentacon 30mm f/3.5, a vintage wide-angle M42 screw-mount prime originating from East Germany, is the direct mechanical and optical successor to the famous Meyer-Optik Görlitz Lydith 30mm f/3.5, a lens highly acknowledged and acclaimed for its razor-sharpness, unique 3D pop, and close-focus capability.

The lens features a compact 5-element in 5 group construction with 10 aperture blades, a clickless preset aperture mechanism, and a close 30 cm focusing distance.

To use, set your target aperture limit by pulling the outward ribbed ring on the front of the lens to click stop at the required aperture setting. This will allow the lens to be kept wide open at f/3.5 for easy focusing, before stopping down to the pre-selected aperture right before shooting.

Canon EOS Kiss X3, Pentacon 30mm f/3.5

Shot wide open at f/3.5, the lens has the distinct vintage sharpness in the center, but with softness and vignetting in the corners' look, especially on full-frame sensors. Sharpness improves noticeably when the lens is stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8. The lens is also susceptible to flare when shooting against the sun, and may exhibit slightly swirly background blurs (bokeh) under the right conditions.

The compact, completely metal, and tactile lens that is easily adapted to modern mirrorless cameras using easily available M42 lens adapters, and as seen in this case, these images were shot with the Pentacon 30mm f/3.5 mounted on a Canon EOS Kiss X3.

On a Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, with its 1.6x crop sensor, the Pentacon 30mm f/3.5 is equivalent to a standard normal 48mm full-frame lens, a focal range that mimics the human eye's perspective. The lens is ideal for everyday street shots, casual portraits, and documentary storytelling. Its 0.3-meter close-focus distance allows for semi-macro shots with pleasing background separation.
