The Minolta AF Zoom 24-50mm f/4, a classic, constant-aperture standard zoom lens originally introduced for Minolta’s Maxxum/Alpha A-mount SLR system in 1987, and a cosmetic "Restyled" (RS) update in 1992, is one of the hidden gems among Minolta AF series lenses.

The lens remains a budget option today among Sony Alpha (A-mount/E-mount via adapters) digital photographers looking for a compact "walk-around" kit lens for their cameras.

The compact and lightweight lens is a 7-element in 7 groups design with 7 aperture blades, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.35 meters, which is exceptionally close for a vintage wide-to-normal zoom. It measures 69mm in diameter and 60-64mm in length, takes 55mm filters, and weighs 282 to 295 grams (depending on the production run/region).

The (original) robustly built lens, which belongs to Minolta's early autofocus lineup, sports a rugged metal chassis, an aluminum alloy barrel, a metal mount, and a rotary two-touch zoom mechanism with a manual focus ring. AF is controlled by a screw-drive system from inside the camera body.

On the Sony DSLR-A350, the Minolta AF Zoom 24-50mm f/4 is equivalent to a 36-75mm standard zoom (the standard range for general-purpose photography) equivalent on a full-frame camera, with a moderately wide-angle front and a short telephoto rear.

The focal range equivalent makes the lens ideal for environmental portraits and street scenes, as well as for travel and everyday use.

With the focal range, the 36-45mm front end is ideal for environmental portraits and street scenes, as well as for travel and everyday use, with scenes within the context of their surroundings for good documentary and storytelling sequences.

Zooming into the 50mm to 75mm range provides a very natural, flattering compression for people's faces, with enough compression to make the background blur appear closer to the subject with smooth bokeh isolation.

What makes the Minolta AF Zoom 24-50mm f/4 great, of course, is the color science of "Minolta Colors." Like many lenses from this era, the lens yields rich, contrasty, and vibrant color rendering that gives digital images a pleasingly warm, vintage film look.

The Sony DSLR-A350 (a.k.a. Sony α350), introduced in 2008, is a notable entry in Sony's early Alpha A-mount lineup, noted for pioneering the fast-focusing Live View system, as well as a 14.2 megapixel CCD sensor, the second highest pixel count for an APS-C format DSLR when launched, which is marginally exceeded by the Pentax K20D 14.6MP APS-C CMOS sensor. The DSLR is also fitted with a 2.7-inch tiltable LCD and SteadyShot, a built-in sensor-shift image stabilization system.
