Renowned for its exceptional sharpness and versatility, the Minolta AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (RS), a true 1:1 macro lens, is considered the best of its kind. The lens is a 1993 'Re-Stylized' version of the original Minolta AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro introduced earlier in 1986. Originally manufactured by Minolta for their A-mount SLR film cameras, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro is equally compatible with Sony A-mount digital SLR cameras. The lens was also rebadged and marketed as the Sony SAL-100M28 in 2006, with a shorter barrel design.

The lens is an 8 elements in 8 groups design with a floating-element system for consistent sharpness from ∞ to 1:1, has 9 straight blades (for the smooth and circular bokeh), an aperture range from f/2.8 to f/22, a minimum focusing distance of 0.352 meters at 1:1 magnification ratio, measures 71 × 98 mm in length, accepts 55mm filters, and weighs 510 grams.

Cosmetic and handling updates of the AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (RS) include a rubberized focus ring, white-on-white distance scales, and a focus-lock button. Intermediate to the launch of the AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (RS) and the SAL-100M2 was the Minolta AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro 'D', launched in 2000, which came with higher praise for its sharpness, a larger rubberized focus ring, improved distance-encoding, and ADI flash support.

On the 14.2MP CCD Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 with the 1.5x APS-C crop sensor, the AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (RS) is equivalent to a 150mm medium telephoto lens on a full-frame camera, a versatile focal length for various photography genres, including portraiture, close-up, and telephoto applications. In portraiture, for example, the focal length allows for a flattering distance between the photographer and subject, while its wide aperture helps to isolate the subject from the background.

The versatility of the focal length makes the AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (RS) equally adaptable for capturing scenes, events, and while traveling, portraits, details, and urban close-ups. Image capture is also enhanced by the A350's sensor-shift image stabilization system, or the built-in Super SteadyShot, which helps to minimize camera shake, advantageous when shooting handheld with longer focal length lenses or in lower light. The Super SteadyShot works with any lens mounted.
