While the G5 is not essentially a 'vintage' in the way an old film camera is, the 13-year-old is still very much a vintage enthusiast's delight.
The G5 is the fourth body from the G series, and as with the others in the series, the body design is based on contemporary DSLR moulds.
Targeted as an intermediate enthusiast model that sits above the simpler GF5 but below the top-tier and enthusiast GH2 and GX1 models, the G5 features a 16.5MP Live MOS sensor with a revised Venus engine, a bright 1,440,000-dot EVF (Electronic Viewfinder), Contrast AF (Auto Focus), and full HD 1080p video recording capabilities.
The camera is also fitted with a high-resolution rotating rear LCD with an eye sensor to automatically switch between the 920,000-dot LCD and the 1,440,000-dot EVF.
The G5 was updated to the G6 in 2013.
Physically, the G5 is slightly larger and heavier than the G3, measuring 119.9 x 83.2 x 70.8mm, weighing 346 grams, and comes with an improved grip and a new control lever for better ergonomics. The camera runs on a 7.2V 1200mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery, which is good for about 300 shots, and images are stored on an SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card.
Images are generally good, especially in well-lit conditions.
With the camera, what initially seems like a complicated working environment becomes quite straightforward when you read and practice using the camera alongside its instruction manual. The main menu system on the G5 is simple to navigate, allowing you to access items by pressing the Menu/Set button in the center of the navigation D-Pad.
Menu icons—Record, Motion Picture, Custom, Setup, and Playback—allow for fine-tuning the camera to match an individual's working style, while the Quick Menu (Q Menu) button provides an intuitive and responsive touchscreen control for frequently used settings.
The Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 Asph., a compact prime for MFT (Micro Four Thirds) cameras, acknowledged for sharpness and excellent edge performance, is equivalent to a 28mm wide-angle on a 35mm full-frame camera. The lens, ideal for landscapes, snapshots, and indoor photography, is a slim 0.8-inch-thick design with 6 elements in 5 groups with 3 aspherical elements. The lens focuses internally with a stepping AF motor and has a minimum distance of 0.18 meters. Autofocus is fast and accurate, even in low-light situations.
