First impression images with the 16MP CMOS Pentax Optio WG-II, a very affordable GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) purchase that may turn out to be a truly worthwhile buy, as a solid compact comeback with crisp, sharp, and reliable images. The camera, launched alongside the Optio WG II GPS in 2012, is waterproof up to 12 meters, dustproof, shock-resistant from a 1.5-meter drop, freeze-proof down to -10°C, and crush-proof under a weight of up to 100 kg.
The outdoor waterproof compact features a 16-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, Full HD movie recording capability, a 5x optical zoom lens equivalent to a 28-140mm lens on a full-frame camera, and a 460,000-pixel 3-inch high-resolution LCD monitor.
The model is available in an all-black or with a red faceplate, features a front with a showcases an extensive display of stylistic details, including sloping and serrated edges, and industrial-style faceplate screws, added-on with the camera flash, microphone, speaker, Remote Control receiver, Self-Timer/Focus Assist LED, and a ring of six bulbs around the lens for the 'digital macro' mode.
Exposure modes and other camera functionalities are set through a menu accessed via the Joystick Pad arrow functions: the Top Arrow for Drive Mode functions, the Left Arrow for Flash Mode control, the Right Arrow for Focus Mode functions, and the Down Arrow for Exposure Mode selection.
The WG-II has 88.2MB (approx.) of built-in memory, images are stored on SD/SDHC cards, and run on a Lithium-Ion battery with a CIPA-rated battery life of 260 shots (said to be higher in real life).
