The Olympus Pen EE-S was the world's first camera with a programmable EE shutter with shutter speeds of 1/30 and 1/250 sec. The shutter speed changes automatically according to the light level.

Olympus Pen EE.S

This model increases the appropriate exposure range over its original EE predecessor which has only a shutter speed of 1/60 sec.

While its predecessor, the Pen EE came with a 28mm F3.5 lens, the EE-S is fitted with a 30mm F2.8 lens. and a three-zone focus system to cater to the wider aperture. The Olympus Pen EE series heralded the start of the programmable EE camera boom.

Images here are from a trip down the LRT line from Kelana Jaya to Kuala Lumpur, shot with the Olympus Pen EE-S on a roll of expired film. Post-processing was done on Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3), and the images were edited selectively for Auto Tone Correction, Brightness & Contrast, Color Balance, Hue & Saturation, Color Filter, Sharpness & Blur, Unsharp Mask, and Noise Reduction. Tone Curve, Tilt Adjustment, Gamma, and Color Filter edits were also applied to a few images.

It was a while back when I took the Olympus Pen EE.S and a roll of expired film for a session in the garden. Had the roll developed, and scanned, but kept aside and was completely forgotten because I missed uploading it to the image editor.

To cut the story short, I came across the folder only just recently, opened it up and uploaded the images to the desktop, sieved my way through a lot of mostly murky and muddy images, and decided to edit a few for this posting.

Expired films do not become useless as soon as it passes past the expiry date. Some can last years, or even decades, past their expiry date as long as they’re carefully stored. Heat and radiation are the main culprits that will eventually turn the film into a fogged mess.

I had the opportunity of taking The Olympus Pen EE.S and a roll of expired color negative film on a trip down the LRT lime some time ago. That was the first time I was using the camera and it was a real point-and-shoot experience for me.

Olympus Pen EE-S

Results were of course nowhere near expectation, with blurry and underexposed captures, washed-out colors, grain, and all. To get the images to where they are as shown, they were uploaded for post-processing on Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3).

The Olympus Pen EE-S (1962) was the second model, after the Pen EE in 1961, in the series of amateur EE models produced by Olympus. A true point-and-shoot camera with fully automatic exposure and fixed focusing, these cameras are easily recognized by the selenium meter window around the lens. The EE model became a driving force behind the popularity of the Pen series cameras from Olympus.

What are Art Filters? Art Filters are pre-formatted edits that you can use to help enhance your images to a higher creative level, giving your image the professional edge that you may have set your aspirations to, and a product that is more easily related to and identifiable with a specific photo-finishing genre.

Many current digital camera models carry this functionality, with those from different manufacturers categorizing the product under different monikers.

Dramatic Tone Art Filter effect.
Dramatic Tone Creates an image that emphasizes the difference between brightness and darkness by partially increasing the contrast.

For the Olympus E-camera system, Art Filters are available both as an in-camera setting and as a RAW Development tool on the accompanying image editing software, Olympus Viewer 3 (OV3). This tool works only on *.orf RAW files.

Key Line Art Filter effect.
Key Line Creates an image that emphasizes edges and adds an illustrative style.

Digital Moments - Post-processing tips in digital photography, using Art Filter effects on RAW image development of Olympus *.ORF files.

While I have yet to use the Art Filter as an in-camera option, I have always opted for the Art Filter effect during the post-processing of the image. Images are only curated with the Art Filter effect if it helps to bring them out of their off-grid condition. These are the Art Filter choices I normally experiment with on OV3.

I did a lot of commuting as part of my job spec a couple of years ago. I was stationed in Johor Bharu for six months, which was after a previous stint of six months at another location that is also out of the city.

Map of the Southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia

While it was only a daily drive to and from my home to work for the previous stint, Johor Bahru is too far out for daily drives, which means that weekdays stay in a hotel or other provided accommodation, and a weekly drive routine back for the weekends.

The traveling distance is slightly over 300 kilometers and the drive took me approximately three and a half hours on average from one point to the other. The option of taking a flight will cost me as much time as I will end up not having my own mode of transport.

Driving south means an early morning on Mondays, together with the rising sun, which I will be facing for the major part of the drive, and south on Friday is the opposite in the evenings.

Keeping me accompanied was the old trusted mobile, and these images were for the memory.
