Olympus Zuiko OM 28mm 1:3.5, In The Still And Quiet

My first few shots with the G.Zuiko Auto-W 28mm 1:3.5, with images of the children's play area of the small community park right across the road, literally meters away from where we live. It is sad to see the area looking forlorn and dejected, as the pandemic constraint is still with us, while locals stay away from utilizing the facility.

The G.Zuiko Auto-W 28mm 1:3.5 is a very affordable, compact, and excellent wide-angle lens first introduced for the Olympus OM system. The lens was among the original batch of lenses introduced. Still, unlike most other lenses within the range, the 28mm 1:3.5 remains un-updated until discontinued and replaced with the Zuiko 28mm F2.8.

The lens is a 7-elements in 7-group construction, weighs 180 grams and comes with a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters. Mounted on the E-P5 (2x crop-sensor) I was using, the lens is equivalent to a 56mm lens on the full frame, almost to that of a standard prime, with sharpness and contrast that is legendary of a Zuiko lens.

Just couldn't resist testing the lens, even with a slight fungal infection and a fair amount of dust within the elements when it came in through the mail recently. On the Olympus E-P5, the lens is the equivalent of a 400mm telephoto, the focal length ideal for many field-based sports such as soccer (football) and rugby, or the minimum for quality bird photography, which, at this range, the bird has to be quite close for you to fill up the image frame.

Minolta MC Rokkor-PE 200mm 1:4.5

The test was off my front porch at the tree of the garden fence and one from my own garden shrub, with the shots done handheld with the aperture wide open. The shots turned out to be surprisingly sharp with enough contrast to make the shoot a pleasing experience.

And The Tree Came Crashing Down

It was a bad weather day, recently on May 5th, with the rain falling steadily over the whole afternoon, a few gusts of wind, and the tree right in front of our house came crashing down right over the fence, right across the front porch, and landed precariously over the roof of the porch, forming an archway of fallen branches and wet leaves just away from the car parked under the porch.

The whole incident was a bit of a freak as well. Aside from a few dislocated roof tiles, much of nothing else was in the path of the falling tree, and that includes the ute which was parked across the front gate with its front end butting the stump of the tree, and the chain-link fencing fronting the property.

Equally efficient was the Council, with an accident report team on the scene within half an hour, and the whole mess cleared by late evening. Looks like all is safe and well now, with only the clean-up left to be done.

Industar 50-2 50mm 1:3.5, A M42 Variant

The Industar-50-2 was an M42 variant of the 50mm 1:3.5 lens made by KMZ which builds the lens mainly as an Industar-50 M39 screw-mount standard lens for the Zorki rangefinder camera series. The series was first introduced in 1959 by KMZ.

Olympus Pen E-P5, Industar 50-2 50mm 1:3.5

The lens, derived from Zeiss's Tessar 4-element lens, was nicknamed the 'Eagle's eye'. The brand name Industar was used for all similar 4-element/3-group lens constructions of the whole Soviet photo-optical industry.
