My ode to the age-old HMD Nokia 3.1, which now bears the inevitable signs of a failing battery — a legacy smartphone that remains a steadfast companion on my morning outings. Whether I am stepping out for light exercise, running quick errands at the local farmer's market, or visiting the morning mart, this compact entry-level device, designed and produced by HMD Global under license from Nokia, has stayed by my side since it was introduced in 2018.

When it debuted, the smartphone was acclaimed for decent contrast, vibrant colors, and pleasing screen-quality images. It earned praise for its sturdy build, aluminum frame, and a compact form factor that feels precisely right for an entry-level device.

In favorable lighting, the 13MP rear camera, equipped with an f/2 aperture lens and autofocus, still captures surprisingly good detail for quick snapshots, casual landscape sharing, or documenting daily notes and receipts.

A golden hour shot, for instance, preserves the natural color science of the scene, with warm amber tones dominating the upper portion of the frame and contrasting sharply against the cool, slate-blue and darker hues lingering in the shadowed recesses of brick walls and parked cars.

The constraints of its use, admittedly, have always been its low-end hardware specifications, limited storage, and the absence of modern biometric security. The base model features only 2 GB of RAM, while a standard 16 GB of internal storage leaves roughly 8 GB usable after system files install, making a microSD card essential for media.

It will be a quiet lament when the device finally powers down for good, but until then, it remains a beloved visual art palette for catching glimpses of the morning light and practicing the everyday rituals of visual communication worth sharing.
