Lens Review, SMC Pentax-A 28mm 1:2.8, A Lens Worth The Keep

A retro look at the vintage wide-angle manual focus SMC Pentax-A 28mm 1:2.8, with images shot on the Pentax K-m.

If you are into digital photography with vintage lenses, preferentially with a manual focus prime, then the SMC Pentax-A 28mm 1:2.8 is one of those lenses you must look at and shoot with. The lens is a wide-angle, small and compact, all metal-and-glass, constructed of 7 elements in 7 groups, and should work on just about anything Pentax. It was in production from 1984 to 1988 and has a Sharpness rating of 8.6, Aberrations at 8.1, Bokeh at 7.6, Handling at 9.2, and Value of 9.3 on Pentax Forums.

The SMC Pentax-A 28mm 1:2.8 (similar to the second version of the SMC Pentax-M 28mm F2.8 lens) is a KA-mount and comes with an 'A' aperture setting which, when set, allows the camera to control the aperture automatically. Other numerics, used for manual exposure modes, remain the same. The KA mount, derived from the original K-mount, introduced in 1983, found use on Pentax A- and P-series bodies. The lens is backward-compatible with the original K-mount.

For this review, the lens was mounted on the Pentax K-m, a compact entry-level digital SLR camera m, introduced by Pentax in 2008 with a 10MP APS-C-sized CCD sensor and fitted with a KAF2 lens mount. On the APS-C sensor of the Pentax K-m, which has a crop factor of 1.5, the Pentax-A will be the equivalent of a perfectly normal lens with a focal length of 42mm on a 35mm full-frame camera.

A prime with a focal length of 40mm (an equivalent in this instance) is perfect for general-purpose photography, family snapshots, scenes and landscapes, and street photography, and may even excel in specialty photography genres. It is probably the only lens you will need on your camera most of the time. While true purpose-built 40mm lenses are normally small and incredibly compact, the adaptation of the SMC 28mm 2.8 lens to the Pentax K-m in this instance will no doubt be without the pancake form factor.

Initial test images (above) with the lens. The color rendition looks great and the contrast is excellent. Focusing is smooth and there is no reason for you to use the aperture setting ring unless you are shooting in full manual mode. This lens is highly acclaimed and accoladed all around.

The rest of these early images are taken on a couple of other occasions, just outside my door, or in the community park from across the street. Most shots were taken wide open at F2.8, except for the sky shots which were at F5.6.

The lens is easily available on the auction market or in brick-and-mortar stores. I bought mine for just over US $26 (shipping is extra) and it should do me well as a perfectly normal street-shooter lens. For a win-win situation, when push comes to shove, I can always use the lens back as a wide angle on my Pentax KA-mount 35mm SLR film cameras, or adapt it to my other digital ILCs with lens adapters which are also easily available on the Net.
